Jeff, there is no need to give up on biotechs. I have been in and out of several and haven't lost on one yet. Currently I like XOMA and personally I know nothing of their product except what I read in Company releases and on the SI thread (lots of knowledge here). This happens to be one that I am long on and will wait for that ship to come in, wether it be 6 mos or 18. (not to say that I wouldn't day trade it as the opprotunity arises). Don't sell yourself short, if you know business, you can get around some of the technical stuff.
