Years ago I had a bunch of smaller Sony items, all JUNK.
About 5 years ago I bought a top of the line small portable....dragged all over the place and it just works !!!!
Have a Sony Walkman MP3 and its fine. BUT, bought a daughter a Sony portable 2+ yrs ago and had issues, Sony gave us a new one ( nice upgrade) and then Hard drive died catastrophically ( my first dead HD in probably 100 man years of computers !) ( think it was a Seagate) but we could not wait for warranty repair and had independent replace HD in 24 hours and had an image backup. Now the USB ports are temperamental. Just bought daughter a new very small $$ SONY camera that is real 'cool' and bought the extended warranty. A friend bought a hi end portable with SSD disk and has taken it to extreme conditions in desert Africa and loves it. My conclusion, Sony is a bit more $$. service is friendly and good but units can be hit or miss, probably no different to most other manufacturers. If you go to site that traks freq of repair, Sony does well, is in the top end at 3rd place ( ASUS & Toshiba are higher I think while HP is bottom)
