Matsushita To Boost DVD Capacity At California Plant

satellite.nikkei.co.jp

OSAKA (Nikkei)-Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will more than triple production capacity for DVD blanks in the U.S. to 2 million discs a month by next spring, and may increase capacity in Japan as well next year. The firm aims to meet growing demand, mainly in the U.S., for DVD software.

A wholly owned Matsushita California subsidiary started turning out 600,000 discs a month in September, and plans to add four production lines to its current two by spring at a cost of some 800 million yen.

The Osaka-based manufacturer of consumer electronics gear currently has monthly capacity to make 450,000 discs in Japan. It expects these facilities to be operating at full capacity by the end of this fiscal year.

Pioneer Brings Fastest DVD-ROM Drive to Market;
DVD-102/302 Supports Multiple Disc Formats Including
CD-R and CD-RW

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1997--Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc.
introduced today its next-generation DVD-ROM drive, the DVD-102/302.

Offering higher performance than competitive products, it features 2.6 times the speed of first
generation DVD-ROM technology and supports 24X CD-ROM speed. This slot-load drive is
compatible with multiple disc formats including CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW.

"The DVD-102/302 exemplifies our commitment to advanced DVD technology and to supporting
industry standards," said Paul Dempsey, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Pioneer New
Media Technologies. "The product's high capacity and enhanced performance make it the most ideal
DVD-ROM drive available for multimedia, imaging and other video-intensive applications."

The DVD-102/302 is available with an ATAPI (DVD-102) or SCSI (DVD-302) interface. It
offers an average seek time of less than 115 msec and access time of less than 140 msec for
DVD-ROM discs. For CD-ROM discs, its seek time is less than 90 msec and its access time is less
than 110 msec.

The drive is equipped with Pioneer's revolutionary slot-load disc mechanism. This mechanism
features a chucking system for safer disc handling, and enables both horizontal and vertical mounting
for added flexibility, ideal for the requirements of OEMs. The new mechanism grips the disc by both
edges without touching the data surfaces and operates gently to eliminate any risk of damage. In
addition, ejected discs are held in the slot with the central hole visible to allow the discs to be
removed without leaving fingerprints on the data surfaces.

Pioneer's DVD-ROM drives can read both single and dual layer DVD discs. In comparison to a
CD-ROM disc, a single-sided, single-layer DVD disc offers seven times the capacity. A
double-sided, dual-layer DVD disc provides 26 times the data capacity. In addition to DVD discs,
the DVD-102/302 is compatible with DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW and CD-ROM discs.

The DVD-102/302 features 512 Kbytes buffer memory, digital and audio output, a front panel
headphone jack and volume control knob. Compatible with the Windows 95 Plug and Play
standard, the drive is easy to install and use.

This 5.25-inch half-height drive measures 148x208.5x42.3mm (WxDxH) and weighs 0.9 kg. It will
be available in January 1998 through the OEM and distribution channels. The U.S. list price is $229.
