Well I'm a "post-selector" who ended up buying in the sector, but I don't necessarily disprove your thesis. The stocks in the MF screen at the time were COCO and APOL (I'm pretty sure there weren't any others). Looking at the screen brought me to the (duh!) realization that this entire sector had been hit pretty hard and it was worth investigating. I looked at a few stocks and decided to buy STRA and DV. To date, the former has underperformed the MF stocks significantly and the latter has outperformed significantly.

BTW, I do invest a portion of my portfolio in MF, but if there are stocks in the screen that belong to a sector where I think I can add value (especially if I think they're worthy long term investments) I leave them out of my MF portfolio and do my own research. So far the jury is out as to whether it would have been better to just add COCO or APOL to my MF portfolio and move on.
