Is Weiner Being Frank?
..........................................................
6/3/2011
townhall.com

Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York is a very busy man. He sits on several important committees. He's newly married to a high-powered wife. He's planning a run for mayor of New York City, which they call "the city that never sleeps" for a reason. In fact, he's so busy that from 2007 to 2010, he reportedly racked up more than $2,000 in unpaid parking tickets in Washington, D.C., partly due to his penchant for parking his car --WeinerMobile, if you prefer -- with expired tags at a taxi stand.

So when the busy Mr. Weiner was asked on Wednesday if he was the guy pictured in the photo of a man in tight gray briefs in a state of readiness the folks at NORAD might describe as "Defcon 1," the congressman responded that he just couldn't say for sure. "I don't know what photographs are out there in the world of me," he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

And, really, who can blame him? I mean, how can we expect him to be able to keep track of all his groin shots, either in his personal archives or out there "in the world"?

Can Justin Bieber account for all of his headshots and cell phone pics? Of course not. So why should we expect Weiner to know for sure whether that's one of his pics? So what if the person in the photo also took the picture? Again, he's a busy guy. Do you remember every time you dropped your pants and took a picture of where your codpiece goes? Weiner's not saying it's definitely not him. He's just saying he can't be sure.

And I, for one, take him at his word.

It's the rest of his words I'm having trouble with.

Weiner insists he's the victim of a prank. He didn't send, via his Twitter account, a young woman the most controversial member-of-Congress photo ever.

Of course, he could be lying, but if he's willing to lie about that, why is Weiner frank about the fact that it may be him in the bulging-landscape portrait?

If he didn't send the picture, he must know who did. At least I hope that's the case. How else is this prankster supposed to have gotten a picture that even Weiner admits might be of him?

Think about it. It would be one thing if the hacker inserted some crazy, random picture that was pulled off the Internet (say, Snooki of "Jersey Shore" eating a foot-long hot dog). But that's not what happened. Weiner surely suspects the picture is of him, otherwise he would disavow it outright.

That suggests someone with an axe to grind got into his computer or cell phone, found one of the congressman's pictures and turned it into an embarrassing pubic service announcement. That's not a minor prank; that's a serious invasion of privacy and -- let's not forget -- a crime.

Weiner is falling, and he can't shut up
.......................................................
by Michelle Malkin 06/02/11
washingtonexaminer.com

How long before Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner conducts his next meltdown press conference flanked by two adult-movie "goddesses" a la Charlie Sheen? Like the delusional bad-boy actor, Weiner actually thinks his self-destructive act is winning, too.

The tweetaholic congressman spent the week dodging and deflecting questions about what he called a "randy" image that appeared in his official, verified Twitter account last Friday. The Fruit of the Loom torso shot in his social-networking stream was addressed to a 21-year-old Seattle college student. She's an ardent fan of the cable TV-hopping lawmaker and a member of the fawning generation that unabashedly asks its political idols "boxers or briefs"?

Curiously, one of Weiner's non-deleted tweets made reference to the Seattle time zone the same night the junk photo turned up. Weiner wrinkled his nose at a question on Wednesday about that inconvenient allusion, dismissing it as "pure, pure coincidence." He refused to explain why he gave Seattle of all places a Twitter shout-out. Weiner, if I may helpfully point out, represents (SET ITAL) New York's (END ITAL) 9th District, not Washington State's.

"Frankly" -- (red flag!) -- he protested, he had "no idea." He then segued into relentless self-promotion of his "feisty" Twitter messages and started braying about the debt limit and health care reform.

It worked on cowed CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer. But did it work on his wife? Would it work on yours?

Sending creepy photos to another adult on Twitter is not a crime, of course. But it is abjectly embarrassing for Democrats to be caught with their double-standard pants down -- especially given how liberals hyperventilated over former GOP New York Rep. Christopher Lee's shirtless Craigslist photo. As always, it's the cover-up that's worse than the original transgression.

In Weiner's barrage of defiant yabber-jabber, the incident has morphed from a "hacking" to a "prank" to "spam" to a "goofy thing." And in the political circumlocution of the year, he can't say for sure if it's his package in the pic (Maybe it's "Randy's"?), but he adamantly maintains he didn't deliver it.

Just a few months ago, this Ick-arus of Capitol Hill was the toast of the Beltway at the White House Correspondents Dinner in D.C. -- cracking off-color jokes about his name, making nasty cracks at his GOP congressional arch-nemesis Rep. Michele Bachmann and boasting (again) about his cable-TV combativeness. Echoing the many fan-girls he follows on Twitter, the media elite gushed that Weiner "killed it."

The party's over, but he's still yukking it up while his political credibility and public dignity are on the line. Washington Times editor Emily Miller reports that Weiner indulged in repeated, bizarre phallic jokes with Beltway reporters on Wednesday afternoon, joking that he was "a little bit stiff" and that the story was "the point of al-Qaida's sword."

He then turned on his heels, sat down for the cameras and played the role of chivalrous knight for his wife, extolling his own virility in doing all he can to "protect her." But his disrespect of women (the obsession with Bachmann is downright creepy) and his disastrously flippant response to the controversy are -- as with everything he's attempted this week -- doing far more harm than good.

Like the mythical jerk who ignored common sense and flew too close to the sun, Weiner keeps flapping his lips while the brouhaha's heat melts the wax off his sullied wings.

He's falling and he can't shut up.

JBD's Weiner admits he LIED.
Weiner Admits Sending Photo, Pelosi Calls for Probe (ethics investigation)

NBC New York 6/06/11 Andrew Siff
nbcnewyork.com

Rep. Anthony Weiner admitted he sent a photo of his bulging underwear to a female Twitter follower and says he has had inappropriate conversations with as many as six women on Facebook and Twitter over the past three years.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi called for an Ethics Committee investigation "to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred."

During a tearful news conference on Monday, Weiner apologized to his wife, family, constituents and friends, and said he is "deeply ashamed" but does not plan to resign. He said he does not believe he broke the law.

"I haven’t told the truth, and I’ve done things I deeply regret," Weiner said, choking up several times. "I brought pain to people I care about the most and the people who believed in me, and for that I’m deeply sorry."

The 46-year-old Democrat, who was first elected to Congress in 1998, said he has never met any of the women he corresponded with. He said his wife, longtime Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, knew about previous relationships he had before they were married last year, but only found out on Monday morning that he sent the groin photo.

He said he believed all the women he has corresponded with online were of legal age, but admitted he had no way of knowing for sure.

Weiner said when he realized he sent the photo publicly on Twitter, he "panicked" and began making up the story that he maintained until Monday.

He insisted that his Twitter account had been hacked, but also said he could not say "with certitude" whether he was the man in the photo.

On Monday he said that he had lied.

"I was embarrassed and I didn't want it to lead to other embarrassing things," Weiner said. "It was a dumb thing to do to try to tell lies about it, because it always leads to more lies... I knew I was putting people in a bad position and I didn't want to continue doing it."

Before the press conference began Monday, conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, who runs biggovernment.com, took to the podium and began taking questions from reporters.

Breitbart said that a woman approached him on Friday and told him she had been engaging in an online "sexting" type of relationship with Weiner. It is not the same woman as the college student who received the Twitter pic.

Breitbart says he has other photos and communications between the congressman and the woman. He posted a few shirtless shots on his website Monday.

Breitbart claims he has more photos that are "of an X-rated nature."

Pelosi calls for Weiner ethics inquiry
..........................................................
POLITICO By John Bresnahan June 6, 2011
dyn.politico.com

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Steve Israel, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, are calling for an investigation into Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) over the series of sexually explicit conservations and lewd photos he exchanged with a half-dozen women during the last several years.

“I am deeply disappointed and saddened about this situation; for Anthony’s wife, Huma, his family, his staff and his constituents,” Pelosi said in a statement released on Monday night.

“I am calling for an Ethics Committee investigation to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred.”

Israel added: “Congressman Anthony Weiner engaged in a deep personal failure and inappropriate behavior that embarrassed himself, his family, and the House. Ultimately, Anthony and his constituents will make a judgment about his future .

“To remove all remaining doubt about this situation, I agree with Leader Pelosi’s request that the House Ethics Committee use its authority to begin an investigation.”

The calls by Pelosi and Israel for an ethics investigation dramatically raise the political stakes for Weiner. While he stated repeatedly during an emotional press conference on Monday that he had broken no laws nor violated House ethics rules during his interaction with the women, a probe by the House Ethics Committee could find differently.

And it also could provide Pelosi and other Democratic leaders with political cover to call on Weiner to step down. So far, none of his Democratic colleagues have called on him to give up the seat that he first won in 1998.

“I am deeply regretting what I have done, and I am not resigning,” the New York Democrat told reporters on Monday afternoon. “I am deeply sorry for the pain this has caused Huma, my wife, and my family.”

Weiner: “I apologize to Andrew Breitbart”

Politico ^ | 6-6-2011 | Keach Hagey
politico.com

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) doled out his first apologies to his wife and his constituents, but also apologized to the media and to Andrew Breitbart specifically during a long and rambling press conference in which he seemed determined to answer every last reporter’s question.
Breitbart had demanded an apology a few minutes before from the same podium, where he climbed after Weiner did not show up on time to his own press conference.
“I’d like an apology from him,” Breitbart said. “This was his strategy, to blame me…so I’m here for some vindication.”
Breitbart said he lost his Memorial Day weekend to fending off accusations that he had been the one to hack Weiner’s Twitter account, after Weiner tried to distance himself from the lewd tweet that appeared there – and was later picked up by Breitbart’s website – by claiming he had been hacked.
He claimed to have one more photo that he would not release because it was too vulgar.
“I’m trying to do the decent thing here and not release the photo,” he said, hinting that such restraint might be tested if Weiner continued to suggest he had been hacked, allowing his supporters to continue to cast blame on Breitbart.
Weiner chose a strategy of total media prostration – though he was firm in his refusal to resign.
“I don’t know what I was thinking,” he said. “This was destructive thing to do. I apologize for doing it.”
After being asked several times, he apologized directly to the media, and to the man who had unexpectedly served as his warm-up act.
“I apologize to Andrew Breitbart,” Weiner said.
