>>But how can a private value be measured?

By dividing the company into its component parts and valuing each against the current market capitalization of companies in each divisions respective peer group. In 3Com's case perhaps....

USR modem division vs. other modem OEMS (lower PE)
USR remote access division vs. Ascend/Shiva et al (higher PE)
3Com NIC division vs. ?
3Com Palm division vs ?
Megahertz PC card division vs Xircom, et al

It's not an easy task, because it's hard to get pure comparisons thus making it quite subjective. In some cases, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole, while in others (such as 3Com IMO) the opposite is true. Would the USR modem division be worth as much without the remote access systems division? No way. Would the foods division of MO be worth more without the tobacco division? Probably.

Dwight suggests in the next post that QNTM is below its PVM. In their case it's easier to measure, since you only have two divisions to deal with: personal drives and large storage systems.

>>What are you suggesting/doing at these levels (COMS)?

Holding. I'll probably look to lighten my position at $55ish. I may buy some more '99 leaps on continued weakness.
