I did not know that. I thought admins had all power of root.

In any case the reason I said use the Apple menu is that a pop up window might be doctored to Apple's software update window. Obviously if you access it by hand it would be the real thing.

.. and so evidently you'd need your own unique OSX DVD that came with your computer to be able to get to root. Sounds safe to me ... thanks
