I think it was a natural outgrowth of Darwins publication of Origin of species. The smartest people of the time, like Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky, saw immediately what that meant.

As others thought about it they saw a new reality in their minds eye. An existential world is much different than a Christian or Islamic world

It meant there was no devine plan. So how do we exist in this new reality? Where does our validity come from, then.

Our behavior defines our validity.

And Kirkegaard was not an existentialist, but shit ass smart.
