No wonder those Berliners dont understand Austrian or Swiss German. Few people understand their Volapük either :)

Most of my friends are not from Berlin. They are from NRW......Essen and Düsseldorf.

Around the corner Bavaria/Austria/Switzerland, the dialect is all very related. Moving away from there some of the local dialects like Bavarian or Schwitzerdütch all get a little bit special. Around Stuttgart they speak Schwäbisch, my former secretary 30 years ago - she came from Franken (Northern Bavaria) didn't understand hoot of that.

Most Germans look down their noses at the Bavarians......they see them as greedy upstarts.

I never had a problem with any of those local tongues, though.

But did they have a problem with you? ;-)
