The US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics released the following today:

"Total employer compensation costs for private industry workers averaged $28.10 per hour worked in March 2011. Total employer compensation costs for State and local government
workers averaged $40.54 per hour worked in March 2011."

A large part of that difference lies in retirement plans (See Table A).
