Green groups sue Interior to stop Appomattox in test case on new permits

Two sets of environmental groups June 9 asked a US appellate court to vacate a deepwater exploration plan approved for Shell's Appomattox discovery-a major legal test for post-Macondo permitting in the Gulf of Mexico.

Although the petitions target the single plan, the groups said they hope to stop all deepwater exploration until US regulators demand more from the industry, including reliable blowout preventers, better spill estimates and live simulations of containment devices.

"The goal is to make drilling safe," said David Pettit, senior counsel for the Natural Resources Defense Council. "Our view is that there should be no new drilling until we reach that level." [snip]
