Hank, I have one word for you. COMDEX It's like ducks going south for the winter. It happens every year. Should be a good time short near the end. If HWP earnings are good, this tech. drop could be over with.

Greg--long then short then long <gggg>

Thanks Hank, I'll print it out and study it. I wish I could have been buying and selling today (coms was the one I wanted to do it with). But I couldnt get Datek to come in when I was getting ready for work. I also wish I didnt sell my 200 shares of DELL last week. Bad timing.

Then you do not go short on a stock and expect to get out in a day or two, necessarily?
Do you still think Dell will go down to the 60's after today's run up?
I thought hedging and selling short were the same thing???

Hi Hank,
Dell is holding its own today. But the market is not.
Although I am a novice (barely 11 months experience) I have been watching the NYSE and NASDAQ charts and formed some opinions. First is that we may indeed be in a bear market, and we are certainly still in a correction. Second is that, although I'm no expert, I'm pretty good at psychology type things and a market like this, which cannot consolidate gains, and cannot stay up or flat for even two days, will scare people. I really think it will scare people enough that when there is a rally, it will be short lived, with everyone thinking "now is the time to get out".
Do you hold any positions very long term, like for years? Or do you sell anything that has lost a certain percent of its gain or gone back to what you paid for it (or less)?
I finally learned what long and short meant. I used to think it meant the time held. But now I know that long simply means you bought the stock, not sold it. I couldnt figure that out on my Datek account for many months!
I am trying to decide what to do. I dont really want to watch my portfolio net worth go down, down, down. I think I may have to learn to "short" but am somewhat worried because there is such enormous risk if the stock goes up. (Of course since shorting doesnt have a time limit-does it?- like options, I could just wait until it goes down again, in this market nothing is going to stay up very long. I think.)
Please respond. Am I thinking right?
Thanks for your help.

Hank & Hank,

As far as I know trading was halted.
On the other hand, I just looked if over at quote.com

Looks like it's back above 70. But I don't trust it.

I'll see what I will do tomorrow.
I'm thinking of selling because these kind of drops are usually
followed by a short bounce, followed by a further decline.

On the other hand, their product is really good. Although the
decision is not made there is a big change we will use it to
solve the performance-problems on the project I'm doing.

Maybe I told you we are talking about 400 clients, and I expect
them to use it also for other applications. Thin clienst are hot,
and will stay hot for a very, very long period of time.

By the way, what a coincidence. It was only yesterday that I
posted that I also considered CTXS as a gambling-stock.
I hope this give you a brief indication of the size of my holdings.
What really bothers me that you were right and I was wrong
(so far, let's wait if the after hours quotes are right).

But I'm a good sport, and I can live with the loss.

Thanks for your posting yesterday. But please DO NOT SHOUT.
You must realize that I read it just after waking up, before
going to work.

By the way, AJAX won 6-0. I'm aware that you are absolutely not
interested in this kind of information, and that's why I post it.

Promise me that after you cover on CTXS (with a BIG profit) that
you take your wife out for a real romantic diner.
Look for quality, not for quantity.

Wish you all the best,

Paul
