Wary Japanese send sales of Geiger counters soaring
Sales of Geiger counters have soared amongst a nervous Japanese public and despite efforts by the government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. to play down fears over the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear reactor.

Fuji Electric Co., one of Japan's largest manufacturers of the radiation detecting devices said it is having trouble keeping up with demand from the public, on top of requests for equipment from schools, city authorities, hospitals and the emergency services.

"We used to sell around 200 units a month before March 11, but that has gone to requests for more than 2,000 a month," Katsuhisa Uchida, a spokesman for the company, told The Daily Telegraph.

"People are reading the newspapers and watching the news and they don't feel safe," he said. "They are concerned and they want to be able to check radiation levels for themselves."

Electronics shops that stocked Geiger counters are reporting that they are out stock and unable to secure additional supplies.

In the 11 weeks since the magnitude-9 earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that destroyed the Fukushima plant, Tepco has repeatedly stated that it is making progress in its efforts to regain control of the facility.

But those claims have failed to convince the public and this week the company was forced to admit that the fuel rods in three of the plant's reactors have melted down.

High levels of radiation have been found in the air, water and soil close to the plant, which is 150 miles north of Tokyo, and more than 80,000 people have been evacuated from the immediate vicinity. Public concern has grown, however, after traces of radioactivity were found in vegetables, seafood and tap water in the capital.

A new United Nations report has also underlined the fragility of Japan's preparedness to deal with natural disasters, with the 2011 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction saying the collapse of Japan's infrastructure was on a scale that could have been expected in a developing nation.

"In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, it became evident that even in this highly sophisticated and well-prepared society, the impact of physical hazards on infrastructure can quickly lead to outcomes normally associated with poorer countries: large-scale food and water shortages, shelter crises and logistical collapse," the report stated.

i talk to people about fukushima and they literally have no idea what i'm talking about.

they think it has been resolved since it isn't in the media.

noooo... the big finance capital crooks (bfcc) own the media.

the media is simply their advertising arm.

nathan's economic edge blog has the latest news...

seattle residents inhaling an average of 5 "hot" particles compared to 10 in tokyo.

rabbits being born without ears in japan.

ZH said a doctor notice a 35% increase in infant mortality since fukushima radiation hit...

zerohedge.com

you know, minor stuff.

go ahead, get along with your life.

my hepa filter and storable milk (bought before radiation hit the milk supply) will minimize my exposure, but i'm a looney toon.

i don't think the MSM of whatever bfcc political persuasion isn't gospel truth.

they are lying about a lot more than fukushima, too, but very few can bother to care.

if i could only monetize apathy.

oh, wait, the bfcc crowd already has!

I knew that was going to be bad. I stopped talking about it as some were sensitive. But I knew it was much worse than they were saying.

Machio Kaku told the world it was very bad weeks ago. He would know and he would say. It is his nature.

No one worried here yet.

The north slope has so much radiation one needs to limit their intact of cariboo. Nuclear testing.
