"Are you from the land of Sky Blue Waters??? (edit: My Bad: You are not drinking Hamms <G>) Not my normal impression of the Mistake on the Lake...or perhaps you are from somewhere south of that. "

NE Ohio - just east of Cleveland. We have a great micro brewery here.

"I do not see how the government can force corporations to start massive rehiring, even though many are sitting on huge cash positions. My husband and I have hired several people this year, having our pick of people, but we don't need more than a few. Who is going to step up in? I'm retirement age and take no salary from our corporation. All money goes to paying others in hopes that this will be beneficial to our community and others in the long run. Others like us are doing the same but the unemployment in SW Florida remains entrenched."

Government cannot force a company to hire but they can force them not to by bad labor and tax policy. There is much angst about the health care law but I think Dodd - Frank is a far bigger problem - particularly for the banking industry - with the huge amount of rules yet to be written. The government wants banks to lend - and then conducts war on the banks.

Your benevolence is admirable - what business are you in? I look for some sort of tax holiday to repatriate foreign balances to the US. We hear of big corporate balance sheets - but much is stranded overseas,

"I have lightened up on some energy position but it is still by far the majority in my portfolio....Thank heaven this week for MHR. MP"

This was a very tough week. It is another cool and rainy day here - the great heat wave is long gone - and I am cleaning up my records and setting up for next month. The experience is not pleasant.

This week I went to a presentation by Bob Dickey of RBC Wealth Management. It was an open to the public presentation hosted by a local radio financial talk show. The talk was all about trends. He believes we are in a horizontal pattern (he likened it to the '70s)that he thinks will take several more years to resolve - hopefully to the upside. From the chart he passed out it looks like ~750 on the S&P would be the bottom of the trend. That would be painful. FWIW - he shows energy as a group in a positive market cycle position (watch crude to hold ~$95)in the market cycle. Gold is also in a positive position (watch to hold ~ $1410).

I don't doubt that your statement is true but it makes no sense to me. Why would you keep a company alive if you derive no or little personal benefit?
