In 1998, it is expected that the no. of new fabs will drop greatly from the no. built in 1997. Nevertheless, semi equip sales are expected to grow somewhat compared to 1997. I asked Lam's IR why this is. He explained that 1998 will be the year of technology upgrades. Shrink to 0.25 micron will presumably be major driver.

I wonder what the difference in orders for say AMAT or KLAC would be for an ungrade vs. a new fab?
