I have a K56 flex modem which I connect to an ISP w/ ASND hdwe. It connects at 31.6k, according to the dialog box. However, I've noticed that when downloading stuff, it goes at higher data rates, typically 40-50k, sometimes much faster than that because of the inherent data compression w/ K56flex.

Usually, the web site at the other end is the bottleneck. The 56k modems are absolutely no good if the ISP has no backbone. I'm happy with the ASND ISP and k56klex combo. Someday in the future, I'll get a cable modem.
