$150 is for the whole CD-ROM, can you buy a 8x CD-Rom for $10?? :o)
I don't think anyone will really serious to make a 50x CD-ROM because
1) no real life speed difference
2) DVD-ROM is here, not much future.
3) technical infeasible as of now because of ultra high rpm.

Even if it does appear, remember pin/firmware compatible means?
