Legalize and tax drugs as part of an experiment for three years. See what happens. My guess the problem goes away by end of year three.

I would also guess there would be less drug use once you took the cool factor out of it. This is the reason most kids start using drugs in the first place.

Of course the above experiment would put law enforcement and the cartels out of business so it is not going to happen. Instead we will build more and more prisons, pass more and more laws and need more and more laywers to deal with a burgeoning problem that should not exist in the first place.

My experience was that anyone who wanted a gun, had one. All mostly illegal.

The illegality is the problem. If you use a gun to protect yourself, you have broken the law. The awe-inspiring guns the Cartels wave around don't do them much good if they face breaking into a home where the person there might be armed. Changes their whole attitude.

But we will never know. I am talking "perfect world." The Mexican Gov will never allow it's citizens to be legally armed.

""legalization. Let people decide for themselves if they want to ruin their lives, but provide no social programs to help out the idiots who decide to screw up so that the choice to do drugs has serious consequences.""

Legalization may become a realistic possibility (at some point, we may have to admit that the "war" is lost), but the consequences and costs will end up being socialized. We take care of those who get sick and die from alcohol... the same would be with other substances and "non-chemical" mind altering technologies. We are not any good at walking away and leaving people to take responsibility for their actions.
