Layer-2 switching is expected to be the next great wave for WAN/LAN upgrades and network performance enhancement. Byte just completed a comprehensive performance review of L2S products with 10 vendors (32 were invited). Ascend was not in the list. Presumably they have no L2S product.

Surprisingly, Madge Networks 3LS product blew away the competition by a wide margin and was named as being in a class of its own. Their 3LS won in all but one category and was close to best in the category it did not win. Cisco's products were just awful - not even close. Most of the rest fell somewhere in between, with Bay and Foundry getting honorable mention.

Much as one hates to add to the gossipy buyout rumors abounding on the net, since Ascend is apparently (?) not a player in this emerging and expected-to-be-huge L2S market, perhaps they should/might buy Madge and leap to the head of that market ?

Robert,

I completely agree. I think both these companies are shooting themselves in the foot by not standardizing. They are forcing ISPs to put off buying decisions because the demand for 56K technology is stagnant because nobody is buying based on lack of standards. IF there were standards, end user prices would come down and therefore there would be more 56K modems in the home, driving ISP demand to implement more 56K modem ports and therefore driving upgrades in Access concentrators from both Ascend and 3Com. By not forcing standardization these two companies are leaving the door open for competition from next generation access concentrator companies. STUPID.

The collective idiots at Rockwell/Lucent/3Com need to pull their collective heads out and get a breath of air.

Well, Bill Gates knows what side of bread is buttered on. The fact that 300mhz processors and 16gig HDD are now available, the bottleneck now seems to be connectivity. I do not agree with you that the k56flex /x2 issue is killing the sector. It is a fact that all the current technologies are coming together and this digital world is fast beginning to materialize. As Bill said this is just the beginning. The great thing for Ascend is their next generation products are beginning to hit the market replacing the existing hardware.

Ascends has the products that will get us the connect speeds we want. The problem is cost, what you can afford to pay. I believe the next big modem craze will be cable modems, that connect 30x dial ups. But the service price will be about $50 a month.

I think we can all live with the current modem speeds for another year. Or you can run out and pay for ISDN now.

microsoft is making sure they have the software to keep up with the growth in scaleability.

I will visiting the Ascend comdex booth this morning and will be getting up close and personal, I will have the opportunity to talk candidly with many inside professionals from everyone involved in the IT sector. So, I will expect to to have lots to comment on. I will also be taking digital pictures of certain events, I will make them available.
