Sequent Computer Systems Inc. to license eight-way server tech:

NCR, Data General flex 8-way server muscle

NCR Corp. and Data General Corp. are hoping bigger is better at Comdex this week as they show off their eight-processor servers, leading a host of server announcements at the Las Vegas show.

NCR's new WorldMark 4380 links two four-processor boards using thecompany's OctaScale technology. The 4380 features 200MHz Pentium Pro processors with 512KB or 1MB of cache per processor, up to 12 hot-plug drive bays, 15 PCI slots, redundant power supplies and fans, and a hot-pluggable diagnostic processor and modem.

Sequent Computer Systems Inc. will license the 4380 technology to build an eight-way server. Digital Electronics Corp. has also inked an OEM deal. The WorldMark 4380, available now from the Dayton, Ohio, company, costs $17,900 for a base model that includes two Pentium Pro processors, a 24GB hard drive and 500MB of RAM.

Data General will show at Comdex the AV8600, its new eight-processor, Fibre Channel-enabled Windows NT server.

The rack-mounted server will ship with up to eight 200MHz Pentium Pro processors, each with as much as 1MB of L2 cache and GB of error correcting code memory. Scheduled to ship in December, the AV 8600 will ship with two processors at a cost of $30,000.

The AV 8600 is compatible with the Westboro, Mass., company's Fibre Channel 3000 Series disk array and other Data General Clariion storage products.

Also at Comdex, Acer America Corp., of San Jose, Calif., will announce a new four-way server.

The twin-tower AcerAltos 19,000Pro4, a four-way symmetric multiprocessing server, comes with 200MHz Pentium Pro processors, 512KB or 1MB cache per processor, 16 dual in-line memory module slots with four-way memory banks, a dual Ultra Wide SCSI controller, redundant power supplies, a 64-bit graphics controller, and an optional internal uninterruptible power supply.

The 19,000Pro4, available in December, will cost from $14,000 to $20,000.
