LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1997--Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. Disk Products Division (TAIS DPD) will highlight DVD -RAM during COMDEX/Fall, Nov. 17-21, 1997, Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth No. L1214.

TAIS DPD's first DVD -RAM drives, the SD-W1001 and SD-W1002 are available now as samples with volume shipments to PC OEMs and systems integrators beginning Q1, 1998.

Toshiba's rewriteable DVD -RAM technology allows storage capacities from 2.6GB (single-sided disc) to 5.2GB (double-sided disc) of data on a DVD -RAM disc. As a result, the SD-W1001 and SD-W1002 surpass all other random access rewriteable/removable technologies for multimedia, backup, data archiving, data storage and small-group software distribution. Also, DVD -RAM technology supports the data rates required for recording full digital MPEG-2 video and digital audio data, which are critical for multimedia, publishing and video applications.

A contributor to the performance of DVD -RAM is the wobble-land-groove recording system. By combining the wobble and land-groove techniques, DVD -RAM is equipped with high-performance writing capabilities, as well as high storage capacities that can be expanded in the future.

DVD -RAM is the ideal rewriteable/removable storage technology to replace all other storage media, including tape, magneto optical, CD-R, floppy discs, removable cartridge drives and removable cartridge hard drives. Toshiba's DVD -RAM drives write data onto DVD -RAM discs in cartridges at a rate of 1,352Kbps, significantly faster than today's fastest CD-R drives at 600Kbps.

Further differentiating the SD-W1001 and SD-W1002 from current rewriteable/removable storage systems is its overwrite capability that allows users to record new revisions of data quickly and easily, without having to first erase old versions of data from the media. The discs are available in a single-sided 2.6GB disc, and a double-sided 5.2GB disc. At a media price of only $30 per single-sided disc or $50 for double-sided disc, DVD -RAM storage costs less than one penny per MB.

The DVD -RAM drives provide data transfer rates from DVD -RAM media at 1,352Kbps; DVD -ROM media at up to 1,487Kbps; and CD media at up to 2,400Kbps. The SD-W1001 supports burst transfer in SCSI synchronous mode of 10Mbps. The SD-W1002 supports burst transfers of 16.7Mbps in DMA multiword Mode-2 and PIO Mode 4. For optimized transfers, both drives feature a 256KB buffer.

Both new internal DVD -RAM drives offer a fast 150ms average random access when reading DVD media. When reading CD media, the drives provide a 120ms average random access. The drives are capable of reading all types of data recorded on DVD discs -- including movies, music, games and data on DVD -ROM, DVD -Video, DVD -R or DVD -RAM discs and can also read CD-ROM titles and play audio CDs.

Toshiba's new DVD -RAM drives boast the same leading performance and reliability attributes as Toshiba's leading-edge DVD -ROM and CD-ROM drives. The new SD-W1001 and SD-W1002 offer a Mean Time Between Failure (MTTF) of 100,000 power-on-hours (POH).

Both drives measure 41.3mm (h) x 146mm (w) x 203mm (d) (1.62in (h) x 5.74in (w) x 7.99in (d)) and weigh less than 1200 grams (2.64 pounds).

Suggested list pricing is $799 for either the SD-W1001 or SD-W1002. Samples are shipping this month, with volume production slated for Q1, 1998.
