Why?

"I've yet to meet a businessman who believes that. "

Of course not. They have benefited from the system. Why should they complain?

"It is people who have good ideas and/or are willing to work hard to make things happen."

For some. And for those, more power to them. Even then, luck is a huge factor. This applies even more so to most CEOs and upper management. Usually, with few exceptions, it was because of who they know as opposed to what they know.

"Gates and Buffett didn't get wealthy because of happenstance."

Dunno about Buffett, but Gate's Mom was on the BOD of IBM. A perfect example of how luck plays a part.
