LG Semicon aggressively pursues digital TV ICs, aiming for 30% share techweb.cmp.com LAS VEGAS -- South Korea's LG Semicon here today claimed it has become the first to begin offering commercial chip sets for digital TV (DTV). The five-chip set was designed by the semiconductor maker's sister company LG Electronics. LG Semicon said its VSS (Vestigial sideband Super Star) chip set has been tested by television set maker Zenith Electronics Corp. of Glenview, Ill., which has verified the ICs as providing complete DTV performance. Zenith is a strategic partner in LG Semicon's DTV efforts. The Korean chip maker plans to sell its chip set worldwide, aiming for a 30% market share of the DTV market. By 2006, the company said 130 millionDTV sets are expected to be in use in the United States along. "By working with a member of the Grand Alliance, LG Semicon will provide the first semiconductors to meet the Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) standard in the United States," promised Duke Koo, senior managing director of international sales and trade affairs at LG Semicon. "Our technological leadership will be augmented by our ability to supply a total DTV chip solution, including processors, ASICs, LCD drivers, PDP drivers, Smart Cards and memory." Already, the current samples of the chip set are exceeding expectation for IC in the first high-definition TV sets, planned for next year, said Paul A. Snopko, director of research and development at Zenith. Samples of four of the five DTV chips are currently available. Product samples of the fifth chip--a video display processor, designated the GDC21D701--will follow in the first quarter 1998. The other chips include: a VSB Sync/EQ device, which performs sync recovery, equalization, and phase correction; a VSB channel decoder; a one-chip video decoder; and a transport chip;
