It is connected to their "values" belief. They see the left as delegitimizing their (American/religious) culture and hence the forces of evil will be let loose. Economic calamity just plays into this and since you have to have an advanced degree (probably) to understand modern econ theory all the monetary arguments are beyond them.

There were similar parallels in the slave holding South with the attitudes of the poor and middle non-slave holding white classes.

<<So many on the right are actually poor or middle class who are convinced that the government is out to take what they have and give it to "lazy bum crowd". They seem to be focused on kicking the folks on the ladder below them, not realizing that as they do so the truly rich folks on the ladder above them are picking their pockets.

That is so true and something my mom used to talk to me a lot about: i.e. "pulling one down to build yourself up" . Not doing that was one of her cardinal rules.

E.G. The poor in the south would hate the African American and in that way it made them better than someone else. By keeping blacks down, the poor whites could get a pat on the head from the rich and feel good about themselves. Someone had less status than them.

MY mom was one of 12 kids, raised by a sister and self taught, with only a high school education, but she was a hundred years ahead of her time.

She was so honest and kind and read several books a week. But eventually society destroyed her honesty and decency and she lived with me the last 20 years of her life, a broken woman, and I took care of her. And she really hated Republican's-lol!

For how cruel they were.

Great woman.
