Share buybacks are just ways to keep your stock price up without expanding, hiring more workers or even making more profits. It's because corps have billions they're sitting on.

Yes, and it suggests that they think their shares are cheap. Its a way of alerting the market that they are doing better than what the market thinks. Have the time they end up spending only a bit of the money. In fact, I think its a wast of good capital but you know......you've got to keep those shareholders happy. And with some of the dot com/tech stocks........it doesn't hurt to take of some of the millions of shares they produced in the 90s.
