Why would someone carry a gun when jogging. Below are five possible answers from St Louis and elsewhere. I can think of an example of a woman being killed while jogging. And of course, that's how Chandra Levy was killed - jogging in a park in DC:

A) Washington DC

(wikipedia) .... On March 3, 2009, D.C. authorities obtained a warrant to arrest Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who had already been convicted of assaulting two other women in Rock Creek Park around the time of Levy's disappearance.[4] Prosecutors stated that Guandique had attacked and tied up Levy in a remote area of the park, leaving her to die of dehydration or exposure.[5] In November 2010, Guandique was convicted of murdering Levy;[6] he was sentenced in February 2011 to 60 years in prison.[7] ....

B) A similar crime in Houston:

Man Convicted of Killing Jogging Mother in Houston
June 20, 1998| ReutersA jury Friday convicted a man of the murder of a mother of three who was strangled with her own shoelace after going for a jog near her home in July.

C) An attack while joggin in the Woodlands - a well-off area not far from where I live:

.....
A 57-year-old woman said she was wrapping up her workout at around 6 a.m. Thursday in the 10000 block of Gosling Road when a man jumped out from behind the trees and grabbed her arm.

"He started pulling my hair and my ponytail and kept saying, 'I have a knife, I have a knife.' He put it up to my neck and dragged me into the woods. I grabbed onto a tree really tight and didn't let go," said the woman, who requested not to be identified.

She said she screamed for help and fought back until the man let go. The woman said he ran off and she ran toward her home and called police.

"It's awfully early to be looking for a victim. His intentions can't be good, especially if he has a knife and he's threatening someone. I don't know what his intentions are, but they weren't good," Lt. Bill Bucks said.

The man was described as white, in his early 20s, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 200 pounds with short brown hair. He was last seen wearing white shorts and a black tanktop.

D) Teens Playing “Knock-Out Game” Beat Gay Man Bloody in St. Louis (Video)

Posted by Jim Hoft on Saturday, June 25, 2011, 11:01 AM

Youths in St. Louis playing the knock-out game beat a gay man near the Galleria in St. Louis.

The victim has a broken nose, a sore jaw and a black eye.

The attackers were screaming “f*cking f*ggot” while they beat the gay man.

FOX2 reported:

A robbery victim attacked near the Galleria says he was targeted for the “knock-out” game in which gangs of teens strike someone until they are knocked unconscious.

22-year old Matthew McLeod of Crestwood had just left the Richmond Heights MetroLink station Thursday at 2:30 PM when a group of five teens approached him on the Galleria Parkway near the I-170 overpass. McLeod said he was struck by two of them once in the eye and nose and once on his jaw. Witnesses saw him fall down and called police.

McLeod said the teens cursed him for his sexual orientation before striking him.

Richmond Heights police were able to round up the 15 to 16-year olds and turn them over to juvenile authorities. The victim’s mother, Sue Lamartina-Virga said police told her the youths confessed to “playing the ‘knock-out king’ game” and targeting Matthew because he looked feminine.

Lamartina-Virga said she was not aware of the “knock-out” game until her son became a victim. She checked it out on the internet. “It was frightening what I read,” she said. “A gentleman was killed..an old man was killed. They target the small, the weaker and they travel in packs when they do it.”

The teens face second degree robbery charges, but the victim thinks they should be charged with assault and a hate crime. McLeod has a broken nose, a sore jaw and a black eye.

,,,Families with small children, retail workers and customers often walk the two blocks between the MetroLink station and the Galleria Shopping Center on Brentwood Blvd.

In April black teens in St. Louis playing the knock-out game murdered an elderly Vietnamese man as he was walking home from the grocery store.

E) St. Louis Youths Plays “Knock Out” Game With Elderly Vietnamese Man… Kill Him

Posted by Jim Hoft on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 7:04 AM

72-year-old Hoang Nguyen and his wife Yen went shopping at a Vietnamese market in the 3900 block of South Grand last Saturday morning just as they did every weekend. It was their last trip to the market. After leaving the store the couple was attacked by four black youths playing “knock out.” The thugs killed Nguyen in an alley.

FOX 2 has video of the couple’s last trip to the store. That is Nyuyen in the white hat shaking hands with a friend.

For the record, the St. Louis Post Dispatch hid the race of the attackers from the public for several days.

KSDK reported:

The funeral for 72-year-old Hoang Nguyen was held at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in South City Thursday morning. Police say the Vietnamese immigrant is the victim of a deadly game called the ‘Knock Out’ game. City leaders are trying to get the word out.

St. Louis police and Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce are tweeting about it, they’re talking to community leaders about it, and city leaders are finding out this Knock Out game, where you attack and try to knock out someone vulnerable, may be happening more than they realized.

Hoang Nguyen’s death followed an incomprehensible crime in an alley near Spring and Chippewa. According to court documents, Nguyen was punched in his head, causing him to fall to the ground and smack his head against the pavement, allegedly by this man, 18-year-old Elex Levell Murphy, who has been charged with first-degree murder. Another male suspect started kicking Nguyen in the rib cage. And it says Murphy admitted it was part of the Knock Out game. Ward Alderwoman Jennifer Florida attended Nguyen’s funeral.

“In the words of Mrs. Nguyen, were ‘father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,’” Florida said.

Alex Murphy was charged with first degree murder for killing the 72 year-old Hoang Nguyen in a game of Knock Out. (KSDK)
