speaking of postal....

My mailman is a union leader for this island and talked with me at length about the PO problems a few weeks back. He's so fast on his route he has time to chit n chat from time to time. -g-

Apparently congress passed mandate forcing the PO to prepay medical and retirement benefits for future postal workers that haven't even been hired yet. Even though the PO is generally cheaper and more efficient than UPS or FedEx, the government seems quite intent on driving the PO out of business.

Here's what PO workers get:

"What will the union do for me? What about what the Union has already done. Because of Union negotiations we have:

$15.21-25.22 per hour
4-5 weeks vacation
104 hours sick leave per year
No lock out-No lay off protection
Pension
Cost of Living Increases (COLA)
Contractual raises
10 Paid Holidays
Health Benefits
Uniforms or Work Clothes"

Livin' large eh?

Lookie here, the PO is going broke! Note the date on this obit:

"The two funds that hold the Postal Service’s contributions for future retiree benefits are on budget. As a result, reductions in payments for the Postal Service’s retiree obligations have a negative effect on the federal deficit because of the scoring process."
