Big or small traders need volatility to make a profit. They'll attempt to create volatility if it doesn't result from happenings. The nature of the happenings doesn't matter to them as long as stocks go up or down.

I can't prove it, but when watching index futures trading after hours I can see boring low volume trading suddenly come to life with a big volume/price spike - only to return to the base a few minutes later. I think that goes on during regular hours, too, but is less visible because of much higher volume.

PS: I don't trade futures, just watch sometimes
