Justin Verlander is pretty amazing right now...he's clearly firing on all 8 cylinders...the Tigers are clearly fortunate to have a pitching Ace as dominant as Verlander...;-)

Detroit Tigers' bullpen saved by Justin Verlander in 5-2 win over Mets /

Thursday, June 30, 2011

DETROIT -- Justin Verlander wasn't his usual overpowering self. This time, the Detroit Tigers ace lost his no-hit bid on the first batter he faced. He allowed a home run. He pitched through multiple New York Mets threats.

In the end, the result was much the same, a seven-inning outing and 5-2 victory, for baseball's leader in pitching wins.

But this time,Verlander's 120-pitch outing was more vital than just his typical every-fifth-day masterpiece, with the Tigers' bullpen gassed from overwork this week.

So the team's pitching star took the burden upon himself in winning his eighth consecutive start, even if his skirmishes with Mets hitters left him facing several dicey situations.

Verlander left runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth innings. He allowed a solo home run to Mets cleanup hitter Daniel Murphy in the second inning. In the seventh, left fielder Brennan Boesch threw out Josh Thole trying to score on a fly ball.

It wasn't Verlander's best day.

Still, he persevered through a bullpen-saving effort after every Detroit reliever except Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde had pitched at least once in the previous two games.

The victory pushed Verlander to 11-3 and sole possession of the major-league lead for victories. CC Sabathia of the New York Yankees, one of four other pitchers who entered the day with 10 wins, pitches later tonight.

The first game of the season's second half also pushed the Tigers a half-game ahead of the idle Cleveland Indians for the American League Central lead.

Andy Dirks hit a home run for the third consecutive day, giving him six for the season, and also had a hit in a three-run third inning which gave Verlander some cushion.

The Tigers tied it 1-1 in the second inning on Jhonny Peralta's single, a groundout, and Austin Jackson's RBI single.

They took control in the third inning. With one out, Victor Martinez doubled, Dirks singled and Peralta walked, loading the bases. Alex Avila's sacrifice fly scored Martinez. Santiago's single scored Dirks, and an error on the play by center fielder Angel Pagan allowed Peralta to score.

The Mets' Carlos Beltran homered off Benoit in the eighth inning. Valverde pitched the ninth.
