Engineers are not scientists.
The AAAS says they are. So you are making up new definitions to meet your purposes.

Engineers study engineering because they are interested in earning top bucks as an engineer.
Really? Says who?

Most scientists study science out of their love of science and desire to learn.

or they are afraid to try and make it in the real world where they have to add to the bottom line. Many professional students out there putting in their post-doc time out of fear, not love.

MD's can be just common GP's and just do mostly mundane medicine (like writing Viagara prescriptions).

Because a scientist applies science in their normal business practice does not mean that they do not advance the science.

It's valid to break out the MD's and Engineers from the group.
It certainly does make sense if you want to throw a bias into your study.

I guess the NASA engineers didn't do any ground breaking science.
