When I did engineering long ago, we had to get 15% more than science students in the same preliminary examinations [chemistry, physics, maths] just to get into engineering and I believe it's even tougher now. Science was a soft-ball option. 50% got them into subsequent years. Engineers started at 65%. Engineering maths carries on to such a level that engineers can design and build things like the super collider, which to some people is considered a science project. So-called scientists like Briffa, Jones and Mann are more like stamp collectors than scientists.
