Looks like the churches shoulda stayed out of politics. If I see it a little bit differently. I think that the government shoulda stayed out of religion. Marriage is a religious institution. Though it is based on simple cultural sanctioning of familial units. the government should be concerned with the contractual partnerships between adults. I actually believe that there shouldn't be any limit on the contractual partnerships based on gender or even number of partners. But I do feel that churches have every right to define the marriages that they endorse.
