Social safety net moderates the economic downturns. People tend to save during downturns and first to go is donations to charitable organizations. I wouldn't count on the rich to take up the slack. They tend to donate to their favourite political institution and/or endowment for the Arts.

So, Ask any food bank, United Way or any other charitable organization what happens to donations during periods of high unemployment. Forced charity makes sure theres some liquidity pumped into the economy. Without the spending by those who get some relief during downturns, more and more businesses go bankrupt. And it snowballs. The downturns are sharper and more painful, even to those who grudgingly pay their taxes.

One other point, the privileged sit in their ivory towers and declare that forced charity is unjust. That it's their money to keep and the state has no business with it. They've no concept of the plight of those that are forced out of their homes and onto the streets. Good on you that you don't have to suffer their pain. Just imagine, a little bit of generosity could do so many others good. Don't you want to do good in life? Or do you just want to sit at home and hoard your cash so you can get that 3rd 2012 Mercedes Gull Wing (oh imagine the horsepower).
