Seagate Software Storage Area Network Storage Management Software Enables LAN-Free Backup for Enterprise Environments LAS VEGAS, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Seagate Software, a leading provider of network and storage management solutions for Microsoft Windows NT Server and Windows NT Workstation operating systems, today announced that it will demonstrate its Storage Area Network (SAN) storage management software technology during COMDEX/Fall. The Seagate Software SAN solution demonstration utilizes Gadzoox' Gibraltar managed Fibre Channel hub and the recently announced Denali managed area switch (announced November 10, 1997). The technology demonstration will be held during COMDEX/Fall on November 17 through November 20 in the Golden Nugget Pebble Beach Room. "The Seagate Software SAN storage management solution, based upon our award-winning Seagate Backup Exec software, will optimize Fibre Channel technology to provide a cost-effective, high-performance solution for large-capacity storage management," said Terry Cunningham, president and chief operating officer, Seagate Software. "This demonstration is a powerful assertion of our move to support next-generation storage technologies and is the first in a number of announcements Seagate Software will be making in this area." Seagate Software's support for secondary storage Fibre Channel technology will offer enterprise-class solutions to Windows NT and Novell NetWare environments with scalability and performance benefits previously only available to Unix and Mainframe platforms. The new SAN storage management software technology will increase the performance, manageability, productivity and reliability of enterprise-wide data storage. Seagate Software plans to continue its fast SAN technology development progression and expects to be the first software vendor to deliver a comprehensive SAN storage management software solution that optimizes the benefits of shared tape storage using Fibre Channel technology. Leveraging its strategic relationship with Gadzoox, via Gadzoox' partnership with Seagate Technology, the new Seagate Software SAN solution will be demonstrated using Gadzoox Fibre Channel arbitrated channel loop products. It will enable data backups to be performed "behind" the server, eliminating LAN backup traffic, and easily integrate into a data-center and enterprise-management framework for increased data availability and a reduced total cost of ownership. "Storage Area Networking has rapidly been embraced as the enabling architecture for the next generation of enterprise storage and storage management solutions," said Bill Sickler, president and CEO of Gadzoox Networks. "The LAN-Free backup environment being jointly developed by Gadzoox and Seagate Software addresses the critical needs of the enterprise by simplifying and accelerating remote data backup, mirroring, and vaulting over distances of up to 10 kilometers." Seagate Software will soon be leveraging additional strategic partnerships in future SAN storage management technology announcements. The Seagate Software SAN storage management software technology is based on the company's award-winning Seagate Backup Exec product. Seagate Backup Exec is part of a broad family of Seagate Software storage management solutions designed to protect and manage computer data at all levels of an organization from the desktop to the enterprise and on all popular computing platforms.
