Former pitcher Russ "Mad Monk" Meyer dead at 74

Russ "Mad Monk" Meyer, who pitched 13 seasons in the major leagues and was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies' "Whiz Kids" of the 1950s, died Sunday night of congestive heart failure in Oglesby, Illinois. He was 74.

Meyer was 94-73 with a 3.99 ERA for the Chicago Cubs, Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Athletics before retiring in 1959. He pitched for the Phillies from 1949 to 1952, compiling a 17-8 record with a career-best 3.08 ERA in 1949.

Meyer pitched in three World Series, appearing for the Phillies in 1949 and the Dodgers in 1953 and 1955. He served as a coach for several teams and was pitching coach for the New York Yankees under then manager Buck Showalter.
