Anti-Greece rallies planned in support of blocked flotilla

OTTAWA — Demonstrations are planned today outside the Greek embassy in Ottawa as well as the Greek consulates in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

They'll be protesting the move yesterday by Greek authorities to prevent a ship carrying Canadian protesters bound for the Gaza Strip from leaving a Greek port.

Greece is banning vessels from going to the Palestinian territory, which is blockaded by Israel.

Israeli officials say the sea blockade stops weapons from reaching the Hamas militants who control Gaza.

Organizers of today's rallies claim the Greek coast guard boarded the ship, and tried to arrest a Canadian for refusing to hand over the boat's registration papers.

Ultimately, no one was arrested.

The vessel is one of nine ships that have been trying to break the Israeli blockade to deliver aid to Palestinians on the Gaza Strip.
