I think that part of the issue with the founding fathers is that the slavery angle is used to discredit the US Constitution. And the sins of the founding fathers are exaggerated as a part of this. It is pretty clear that none of the founding fathers were angels (or any past or current politician for that matter), but they also put together a form of government that was (and is) unique and brilliant to this day.
