I bought Acronis True Image, but a friend of mine bought Acronis True Image Plus. THAT is the one to get. It somehow removes the drivers so you can load your image or clone a drive to a different set of hardware.

I have done exactly that, removed drivers before shutting down, then taking the hard drive to a different machine with a different motherboard, installed the appropriate drivers for the new hardware, and XP just kept on running OK with no authentication problems.

What is even better, I came across a Volume License Key version of XP that works on every machine tried so far and with no need to authenticate. It is amazing to watch as it searches within Windows for the needed drivers or uses Microsoft's update function and downloads needed drivers from the Internet -- all automatically. The only problem with this version of XP is that it will not pass WGA scrutiny. I don't really depend on this version but keep it around as an entertaining oddity.

I will watch for a deal on Acronis True Image Plus!
