Re: "Money that the banks have squandered." I don't know if 'squandered' is exactly the right word.... 'Sitting on their hands' is probably more like it. (As of the last quarter of 2010, most recently available data from the Federal Reserve sez that the big banks have over $1.6 TRILLION in cash that they have deposited at the Federal Reserve... where they are earning a 'safe' but minuscule pittance on their deposits instead of choosing to lend the money into the American economy.)
