GTE connects to the backbone with a scalable solution. GTE may start off with one T1 but can quickly add up to several T3's if needed. GTE monitors the contingency on the line with a performance guarantee of 99.7%. The 10Mbs you speak of is typically for the whole service area, several of the people involved in GTE trails where on cable service also and said there was no comparision, ADSL is much faster and a whole lot more reliable. "ADSL is never down and very consistant with performance."

GTE found in its Microsoft ADSL trials that one T1 line supports 200 ADSL users. I imagine that they have to upgrade the backbone capacity later but for todays internet a shared T1 line is fast enough.
