If no one ever changes their minds, then why do we bother to discuss anything? Do we enjoy futility? What would be the point of any forum?

I believe that peoples' opinions are affected primarily by the opinions of those around them. To me it's obvious that people do in fact change their opinions as a result of interaction.

Perhaps mind-changing is a slow evolution, slow enough to not notice in any specific discussion. But I bet if you compared a person's opinions now with what they were a year or two ago, you would see the shifts.
