Interesting piece. I've been thinking for some time that we are probably at a critical turning point in American political history, when the Republican party splits. And the few remaining moderate segments move to the Dem party and solidify its more conservative wing.

But, while I still think that's likely (no time frame), it might also be possible we'll see a split on the left. The dynamics there are dramatically different so it's not possible to see how that emerges. But it is clear that the folk who've been disillusioned with Obama for some time have larger audiences. Perhaps that's passing. Much of it, at least for the moment, will depend on the terms of the debt ceiling deal.

Living in interesting times.

There are some who think he can be impeached for the raids against Lybia and if one reads the constitution it is not unlikely.. if Congress wanted to do it.

Three wars. Not bad ......

But for a pacifist like me it's three too many.

If no deal is reached on the budget that could provoke a huge financial crisis which could subsequently bring all the politicos to their senses (a la their response the day after Lehman went under) and cause both sides to pick up the pieces and try to put humpty dumpty together again.

Then again there seems to be enough lack of intellect in the freshmen congressional class for them to try to take their marbles and go home and blame the other side. Could go either way.

I don't think we have but a choice but to try and back Obama who is trying to provide a (political) rationality to solving the problems that confront us. You are attempting to provide and ideal rationality (solutions that would fix the problems) without factoring in the political calculus that is necessary to solve these equations.
