I agree. We are a long ways from Kennedy's speech:

We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.

Sad really.

I dont know. If you start with, well who is going to pay for it? It starts to get murky. We are in a time where there doesnt seem to be any benefit in "exploring " space. Im not sure there ever was. Seems to me it was more of a military concern rather then some star trek dream that lead us that way in the first place. cant let those commies control space! All kinds of benefits were gained, Im the first to admit, but without some kind of objective, either profit or protection,we humans just lose interest.

If you think its a govt responsibility you have to give up something or raise taxes. If you think there is great promise for profit, well let the next zuckerman figure it all out at private enterprises expense. In this part of our evolution the cost is just more than americans want to pay. Should the ROW figure out either some military application or some profit motive I'm sure that NASA will be resurrected in some new form. Yes I know that other govts still reach for the stars, but they will also give it up if there is no profit or protection.

With future advances in technology perhaps reaching space will not be so expensive, or once up there we can actually go somewhere, which if correct, means shutting the shuttle is the correct choice. Public money is needed elsewhere now.

If we are to survive however, someday we are going to have to leave mother earth.
