You can imagine the reaction of the professor who was running the dig; he was well-known for his volatile personality and temper. It set the tone for a long, hot summer.

The reality is that it wasn't an important artifact. There are a lot of colonial clay pipes around (though in my imagination, I saw it as a gift to the Indians from George Washington, who lived just across the river from the village).

The only person who knows who sat on it is the sitter.
