90% efficient?

I was at a party just last Friday night here in the Seattle area and had a long discussion with one of my friends who does research and engineering with LED's. He is an EE and optical engineer and works pretty exclusively with LED's. We had a long discussion about LED efficiency and he said the "state of the art" for blue LED's is slightly above 40%. No LED currently exceeds 50% in efficiency.

I've worked with LED's since the early 1970's and we have a long way to go to get to 90% efficiency. Currently it's impossible. If we are lucky maybe the mid 60's in a number of years.
