And if the management failed by giving in to union demands, the union is still to blame for making demands that where not in the long term interest of keeping the company a going concern. One might blame management more for this, since they are supposed to look out for the interest of the company, but even if you do that, both are to blame.

But managements have to weigh the long-term consequences of strikes against the short-term benefits of coming to an agreement. It is a negotiation process, but management has a gun held to its head. There was a time when strikes were legitimate tools IMO; however, at some point it transitioned to legalized extortion. I think Reagan had the right idea, but the auto manufacturers really didn't have the option to just fire them all.

"The workers and the union are not synonymous."

Yes, they are.... If management is controlled by unions they shouldn't be managers.... The Japanese showed this many times by taking over a failing company here and by simply changing upper management turned it around......most administrators and bureaucrats were dumped but not the worker bees..... Lee Iaccoca turned Chrysler around, Lou Gerstner turned IBM around...there are dozens of examples...

"the union is still to blame for making demands that where not in the long term interest of keeping the company a going concern.."

nonsense...management must be able to see what the long term needs and run the company accordingly. A company can eliminate pensions and health benefits without consulting unions..... You're looking for an excuse not a reason......
