The entitlement in their present form are unaffordable. Therefore they won't be continued in their present form indefinitely. At some point they will have to be changed. Either they will be formally changed, or the law will still call for the huge payouts but the payouts won't be made, or won't be fully made (edit - or money gets "printed" to pay them and then the COLA calls for more, and so even more money gets printed, leading eventually to hyperinflation).

The question is, how long do we wait before changing things (the longer we wait the worse the debt, and the more sudden and difficult the changes will be), and how does our political system handle this problem (do we get riots in the streets, etc.?).
