Larry - Re: "The two are reportedly discussing the possibility of IBM
picking up some K6 manufacturing for AMD, using its new copper chip technology to enable the K6 to reach clock speeds beyond 300MHz and bus speeds above 66MHz."

I haven't a clue if there is a shred of truth in this rumor - but this idea was broached a few days ago on the AMD thread by Monica Detwiler.

However, I will say this - AMD SHOULD BE talking to IBM Microelectronics as an avenue for getting out of a prolonged, serious yield slump. If AMD is NOT investigatiing this approach, the AMD management should be dismissed immediately.

AMD's K6 technology was lifted from IBM's process technology - recall that IBM made the Nx586 for NexGEN before AMD bought NexGEN and NexGEN was designing their Nx686 (now the AMD K6) based on IBM's agressive 5-layer metal, STI, LCI 0.35 micron process. Thus, there may be a very close "compatibility" between the K6 circuit layout, AMD's process and IBM's process.

As for copper - that is a bit problematic. Clearly, AMD needs to improve their speed but this is a stretch at this point - I doubt that IBM knows the ramifications of using copper in a production basis - it may have cost and yield problems that negate its use in the short term.
