Bill Gates recently said government efforts should be aimed at basic research, not deployment of new technologies and all the things you mentioned are examples of government forcing deployment of a government chosen technology.

Mine work flawlessly...i told you before.

Consider the current rush to electronic health records, which is nothing short of a disaster because the software wasn't ready.

All good things ramp...the first PC on my desk was a useless POS...look today. If we followed conservative dogma i'd be living in a cave instead of my nice house.

And of course, there is the Chevy Volt.

A nice piece of technology ...but what does the government have to do with that pray tell?
