<<Japan's Reversal of Fortune Returns It to Days of Malaise

By DAVID P. HAMILTON
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

TOKYO -- Until a few months ago, government officials and many private
economists alike believed that Japan's economy was finally on the upswing
after years of stagnation.
...
But in the last few months, matters have taken a negative turn in Japan,
which now faces the possibility of another bout of extended stagnation or
even another recession.
Japan could conceivably find itself in a classic recessionary
spiral, one that could threaten the U.S. and Asia as well. A stagnant Japan
won't be an attractive market for desperate-to-export Asian firms, and it is
likely to generate even higher exports to the U.S. and Europe.

etc. etc.
